Meet Emily Hofmann – Portfolio Manager

Emily is a Portfolio Manager at Alitis Investment Counsel with over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. In this video, Emily shares what she loves most about her job, what makes Alitis different, what she likes to do for fun, and more.

Why should people choose to work with Alitis?

One of the reasons I think someone should choose to work with Alitis as their Investment Councilor is the people that they’re going to work with.

What is your superpower or unique ability?

My unique ability at work is being able to explain things at the client’s level. I’ve noticed that working with so many families, everybody has a different level of detail that they need or want to move forward. I always try really hard to take those complicated financial situations, and explain them in a way that allows clients to walk away feeling comfortable that they understand what’s going on.

What makes Alitis different?

At Alitis, we have a broad team with lots of credentials and years of experience, but what makes us different is that we’re all working together. We’re not competing against each other for clients, which brings a lot of benefit to our team. It allows us to specialize in our niches, support each other, and really get to know about each other. We also have a chance to get to know each other’s families, which makes a lot of sense to our clients. When clients walk in the door, we want to know their kids’ names, their puppy’s name, and what their favourite sport is. That approach is shared across our whole team at Alitis – it’s not just one person doing it. It’s in our day-to-day culture.

What do you like to do for fun?

We love boating. My oldest son is obsessed with fishing, so we spend a lot of time on the water on in Desolation Sound, around Quadra Island, and Cortes. I love being on the water for the day, whale watching – we get such amazing Humpback Whale shows all the time. So that’s pretty special.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

The most satisfying part about my job is the problem solving. I don’t mean problem solving as in I’m fixing bad things, but more like putting together a puzzle. When I meet a new client, I’m getting all sorts of information. I’m getting numbers, details, emotions, goals, fears – all these pieces. Then pulling that together with information about our investments, products, the economy, and what’s going on in the world. I take all those inputs, put it together and find a solution. And each time it’s different. So I like that the problem solving is challenging and creative – it’s not cookie cutter.
