Our Story

Alitis is a boutique investment counsel and manager of alternative investment strategies. At Alitis, we believe that following a disciplined data driven approach to investing is key to delivering exceptional performance while managing risk for our clients. Alitis was founded by Cecil Baldry-White in 2009.

Three major trends in the world played a role in the need to create Alitis:

Trend 1:

Low Interest Rates

As interest rates in the developed world bottom out, at some point they start to move higher. The days of easy returns with traditional fixed income products has come to an end.

Trend 2:

Need for Consistent Returns

Globalization of trade and financial systems made the world’s economies increasingly dependent upon one another. Negative economic conditions in one part of the world has global ramifications, resulting in increased correlation of the world’s markets – a condition that makes diversification using traditional asset classes much more difficult.

Trend 3:

Desire for Less Volatility

The accumulation of debt by both governments, corporations, and consumers is expected to be a long term drag on economic growth, negatively impacting currencies, and increasing the risk of future financial shocks.

From these trends, it was apparent that traditional portfolios made up of stocks & bonds likely would have difficulty performing well in the coming years.

To address these challenges we have designed and launched a number of investment solutions that utilize a much wider variety of asset classes and investment approaches resulting in a significant level of diversification. This approach is used by some of the most progressive pension funds, endowments, and high net-worth individuals to reduce the risks associated with an over-concentration in traditional asset classes. We believe that this is well suited for investors who are looking to reduce portfolio volatility while taking regular income or building wealth over the longer term.

Today, Alitis Investment Counsel manages over $310M of private client money which includes a sizeable allocation to alternative investments. Our team is growing rapidly as we seek to invest in high-calibre talent to deliver a superior investment experience to our investors and adviser partners.

Our growth continues as we expand our alternative product offering to registered Portfolio Managers, Investment Advisers, Institutions and Family Offices across Canada. We are pleased to be able to offer such a unique investment solution that provides access to an asset class that is typically only available to accredited or institutional investors.
